When to Call a Professional Instead
Cerumen impaction, the clinical term for a wax buildup significant enough to cause symptoms, affects roughly 6% of the general population.4 Most of the time, it is manageable at home. Sometimes, it is not.

• Drainage or discharge from the ear canal
• A sudden change in hearing
• A known eardrum perforation, or ear tubes
